Wait, Almost there...
With the popularity of cycling, there is going to be an increasing number of cycles that need repairs. That could be anything from a puncture to new brakes being fitted. If you know how to repair a bike then you could start a small business repairing them. The business itself would be low-cost to start off and the main cost would be labour. You could even start from home.

Sometimes it seems like there’s an app for everything. Yet somehow, new ones keep popping up and selling for lots of money, all the time. If you spot a niche that hasn’t been filled to its potential just yet, and you can learn the coding skills (or know someone who already has them), you could be on to something with this side business idea. Today, it’s even possible to build an app without any coding skills whatsoever. Just make sure you validate your app idea before jumping too far in. Even if your app business idea doesn’t pan out to be a best-seller, you’ll still pick up valuable skills.
Having a specialized skill set can help, especially in some businesses, but even without many skills it’s worth trying something when the risk is so low. My wife and I knew nothing about putting websites online, but grew our internet publishing business to six figures within a few years, starting with less than $100.
Every website owner (including myself) hires copywriters to write content for things like about pages, FAQ’s, or blog posts. Hourly wages for novice copywriters are not very high, but with some experience and a growing portfolio, you can become a freelance writer today and soon be charging more than you make at your full-time job if you find the right clients and brand yourself as an expert with this side business idea. Check out one of my most talented friends, Jory Mackay, for an example of someone who’s doing a great job of positioning himself as a premium service-provider with his freelance writing side business idea. Then when you’re ready to start cold emailing potential clients, pick up my free downloadable freelance proposal template and get started today.
Planning a wedding requires a lot of work and organizational skills. So many couples hire a wedding coordinator to help manage all of the various aspects of the event. You can do much of that work from home, if you enjoy organizing and working with clients.
Did you know that English speakers are in high demand in Asia? As a result many are turning to freelance English teachers using websites like Italki.com. The site is basically a virtual online classroom for freelance teachers and students. Anyone can offer lessons (and set their own price) and anyone can take lessons.
There are a lot of items that can be purchased very inexpensively at garage sales or thrift stores and sold for higher prices elsewhere. A few years ago I discovered that I could purchase good hardcover books at my local thrift shop for $1 or less. I realized that some of them could be sold on Amazon.com for $15-$20, which turns out to be a pretty decent profit. Find and sell enough items and you have a fun home business.
Whether you know web design, how how to handle content management system, write (as suggested above), use excel well, give legal advice, do accounting work, it doesn’t matter. You can provide your service for $5 on websites like Fiverr. There’s a lot going on there, more and more clients are coming to this marketplace, and they all need different things.

Gardening can be very relaxing, and potentially very lucrative. With both the increased interest in alternative therapies and the demand for locally grown and organic foods, an herb farmer can find plenty of customers, particularly if you’re in an urban area. While this does require some space for growing, herbs are fairly small and nearly any home can be slightly modified to allow for an extensive herb garden.
Adam received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism & Media Studies at Rutgers University. He worked for a local newspaper and freelanced for several publications after graduating college. He can be reached by email, or follow him on Twitter.
Owning a food business is the first step for many entrepreneurs to the world self-employment. A food business can mean any of a number of business ventures, from temporary food stands to catering companies.
I guess we should start with the one that I am MOST familiar with. I have been making a full-time living blogging for almost 10 years now, and it isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, but it can definitely make you some money.
A lot of business people are good at producing their product or delivering their service, but less good about keeping careful accounting records. That’s where you come in. You may visit a small business every week or two, pay bills, send out invoices and keep accounting records.
What about an online business? Many of the principles discussed above apply to a business that operates solely online. For example, an online business with employees will need to register with the workers’ compensation and unemployment departments. While an online-only business is unlikely to run afoul of zoning laws or signage restrictions, the online proprietor must grapple with sales tax on certain transactions. In fact, the sales tax rules for online sales are often more complex, idiosyncratic, and ambiguous than those that apply to in-store or traditional mail order transactions. Therefore, a conversation with your accountant is advised before you start taking orders.
That’s awesome! How large of an investment did you have to make putting a commercial kitchen space into your home, according to public health laws? I would love to sell a food product online, but the government regulations are just too cumbersome and expensive for me.
Make sure you are allowed to run a business from your home, especially if you live in an apartment, a condominium or a Home Owners’ Association (HOA). If you are allowed to run a business from your home, contact your local Department of Planning, which you can find online at http://mdcourts.gov/circuit/directory.html, to determine if you need to apply for a zoning permit before you start your business.
A furniture maker’s advice? Don’t be afraid to be a businessperson as well as a craftsperson. Charge more than you think your furniture is worth, and remember that craftsmanship and business savvy are not at all mutually exclusive.
You may qualify for special tax deductions for running the business from your home, such as the home office deduction. Your home office doesn’t have to be an entire room. You can calculate the percentage of your home that qualifies by measuring your work space and dividing it by your home’s total square footage. The percentage is the amount of your annual rent, mortgage, homeowners’ insurance and utilities that you can deduct because the space is used for your business, but it must be dedicated solely to your business — your family can’t hang out there.
While you do not need a degree or certification in order to set out an interior designer shingle, it is really necessary in order to make sure you can meet the needs of many clients. An education in the history and theory of design will allow you to understand trends that you may not like, but your clients do. Median salary: $46,280.
You can start your own firm of providing recruitment services to other companies. You just need good data of candidates looking for Job. Just refer a candidate to the company and get money out of it. It is very good small business idea.
Are you a social butterfly? We’ve all heard of direct sales companies like Avon, but did you know that there are thousands of direct sales companies? Find one that offers products that you feel passionate about and get selling. Direct sale companies offer starter kits that give you everything you need to get started, and they usually have a very low start-up cost. Your first prospects and buyers will be friends, family, and co-workers; you will then build your customer base by getting referrals from these people.
Love the list here! It’s difficult to go out to increase our household income, especially when my kids are home schooled. I tried doing crafts but I guess you need to be patient enough to gain the skills and be good enough with it. Right now I’m doing online selling on amazon and hoping for the best. https://tinyurl.com/y7pukxjz for those who are starting out with online selling.
You can succeed with a specialty food store but it is tricky. You must be ruthless in your research, in both what the market can support, and which competitors currently have overlapping offerings. I would also look at what specialty food stores have succeeded in nearby markets.
Do you have a cosmetology license? Take your hairstyling skills home by cutting, coloring, and styling client’s hair in the comfort or your home or theirs. On-demand sites like Concihairge can help you get set up.
A lot of my friends fly planes. And in many cases their teenage kids do too! They all started with flying lessons. To get certified to the point where you can teach basic flying lessons in a simple, single engine plane, may be easier than you think.
All great ideas! Not sure if you left multi-level marketing off on purpose, but I’ve recently started taking a nutritional supplement called Thrive, and due to the amazing results (tons of energy, great sleep, calming of aches and pains, etc.) I’ve started working as a promoter. There is absolutely no requirement to pay anything to sign up, you don’t even have to stock the product, it is a cloud-based business where the customers order online and receive the product directly from the company. If you get two people to sign up with autoship, you get your product free. Even if you pay for the product it is only about $5 a day, less than a cup of coffee in the U.S. So far I’ve been really impressed.
Indoor Plant Care Service: Target local businesses, hotels, shopping malls and busy home-owners. It involves, watering, feeding, trimming and replacing plants when necessary. This is a luxury item so may be the first to go when budgeting.
Do you play a musical instrument well enough to teach it to others? How about taking your skills at producing music or sound design and teaching others as a service-based business idea based on your experience? Private music instructors in all disciplines charge upwards of $20-100/hr (or more depending upon skill and experience), and you don’t necessarily have to do them in person, either. This makes for a great side business idea that can channel your passion for music into profits.
You could start a baking business where you create dessert items at home and sell them wholesale to local bakeries or restaurants. You’ll need to learn first about regulations in your community for commercial food preparation, however
Investment: The startup costs should be low; you’ll need to create a website and promote your business. If you don’t already have the required skills and experience, you may need to take some training or courses.
The market for website developers is huge and highly competitive. If you lack highly specialized coding skills, I would suggest you consider trying to break into this space by offering flat fee rates to develop new or re-launched websites for smaller businesses or organizations and limit your development work to one platform, such as WordPress.
All of these are excellent ideas, and really go to show that you don’t need some groundbreaking new idea to start a business. Just pick one of these ideas that appeals to you and put yourself out there, and you’re already ahead of all the other people who are still in the “thinking about starting a business” phase (a phase that never ends for most people).
Online businesses are becoming increasingly more dependent on content to delight and attract website visitors. However, not everyone is a born writer, which is why businesses are always looking for freelance writers and editors to help craft and polish quality online content. Often businesses are happy to work with remote freelance writers, which means you can potentially work from anywhere in the world! If you’re a knowledgeable wordsmith, freelance copywriting can be a great home-business idea.
One of our strongest selling books at my book publishing company was “Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands?” Traveling business people and others want to know how to fit in with foreign cultures. With a little bit a research or overseas exposure you could offer basic courses and consulting, and then you could provide more in-depth expertise as you build your knowledge overtime.
If you have a knack for making floral, food or gift arrangements look pretty, consider setting up shop as a gift-basket designer in your home. You won’t need much more than a few craft supplies—ribbons, bows and the like, plus the baskets themselves—so the overhead for starting this business is low.
You should also consider home owners’ associations in your neighborhood and consider the potential impact of your business on neighbors, especially if the business will increase traffic or noise in the neighborhood.
Mechanical Turk operates much like TaskRabbit and GigWalk: it’s a corner online where Amazon gathers tasks to be done, people willing to do them, and people willing to pay for them. On Mechanical Turk, you get to do the oddest jobs you can imagine as an online business idea, made possible by a parallel online universe that runs on hits, visits, surveys, reviews, pins, likes, CPCs, reads, and other metrics. But don’t get too ambitious. The small sums being paid out to human Mechanical Turk users rarely add up to anything seriously substantial, even if you invest most of your spare time into it. It’s a better opportunity for internationally-based people with internet access and lower costs of living than in the US. Here’s one person’s account of his former life as a Mechanical Turk talking through how he got started with this business idea and what the experience was really like.
Buying an existing business will, on average, dramatically increase your chances of succeeding in business. But buying and valuing a business is not usually a simple process, and there are plenty of things to watch out for. I have a number of presentations on buying, selling, and valuing businesses.
Don’t be tempted to start a retail store just because you find a cute, affordable space to rent. Location means everything in retail, and a good location usually costs a lot of money. I would spend several days sitting in front of a potential retail location with a counting device, counting cars and pedestrians walking by, before I’d even think about signing a retail lease. Then if you do get a great location, take full advantage of it with great signage and an enticing storefront.
“The massage therapy business has been growing by leaps and bounds in the last decade, tripling in volume. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, it should grow by an additional 20% through 2016, meaning this home business has strong potential for growth. And, because all in-home massage services are necessarily local in nature, it’s work that can’t be outsourced to another country.”
