Just as there are people who don’t know how to use email, there are also those who don’t want to use it. Virtual assistants run clients’ email and voicemail accounts, aside from performing other digital duties.
Cosmetics: Decide whether you want to join a direct sales organization, make cosmetic products yourself or find your own wholesale supplier. Register your business name and research what licenses and liability insurance you may require. Use product samples, catalogues, price lists and order forms at host parties.
That being said, creating your own product is an incredibly fulfilling experience. Several friends from service businesses told me from time to time how much they wish they were in a product business.
We knew there was a huge opportunity in the VA space, and in order to get started immediately, we needed to create an MVP. Instead of spending resources on a custom solution, we initially used five main tools: Slack for internal communications, Trello for project management, Stripe for payment processing, Zapier for automations, and Toggl to track our eventual 100+ contractors’ time.
Note that many of these ideas could have been listed in more than the single category I placed them in. But I thought it would easier and more interesting for you, if I only listed each business once.
To succeed at this business, I would carefully perfect a few interesting smoothies drinks. Then I would search hard for a location with very high foot traffic location. I would much rather have a tiny location with lots of traffic and high rent per square foot, than a much larger location with the same total rent but less traffic.

These are just a few examples of great home-business ideas you may want to consider. Remember that starting your own home business requires an organized and self-efficient individual. If that sounds like you, go for it-you’ll be working from home in no time.
Home Occupation Permit. Many city or county governments require home-based businesses to have a “Home Occupation Permit.” These permits are designed to prevent a business from adding significant traffic, noise or other environmental conditions such as dust or odors that would interfere with the surrounding homeowners’ use and enjoyment of their property. As a result, most local ordinances describe the types of home-based occupations or businesses are permitted and the limitations imposed on the operations. These restrictions often include: the amount of space that can be used within the home; the number of clients or customers that can visit the home each day; the number of vehicles that can be at the home; the modifications that can be made to the property; and, the number of employees the business can have.
Internet Speed: You probably already have an internet service provider for recreational use, but now that you’ll be relying on that connection to do business, you might want to look into an upgrade. This is especially important if you live with other people who might be using the internet when you are trying to work. Connection speeds can range anywhere from 1.5 Mbps to 20 Mbps. With a 1.5 Mbps connection speed, it takes about two minutes to download a large presentation; with a 20 Mbps connection, it’ll take roughly 10 seconds to download the same file.

Not bad for an easy business idea that’ll keep you outdoors and moving your body on the weekends.

Meanwhile, why not pull out a $100 bill and take a look at what you can do with it.

I loved to collect stamps and coins when I was a kid. In Boston, the dealers’ stores were all side by side on Bromfield street. Today some coin and stamp dealers still have retail locations but many others work primarily online. This is a great business to start part-time and then consider going full-time later on. Or is it just a hobby with the potential for making a lot of money? American President Franklin D Roosevelt would spend many enjoyable hours alone with his stamp collection.

The question I’m asked the most (by far) when I meet and speak with fellow entrepreneurs is, “How do I know which business idea is best for me?” This one is always quickly followed by, “How do I start on this side business idea while I’m still working my full-time job?”
It’s not the sort of side business idea that’s covered in glory, but someone needs to make sure all the numbers add up at the end of the year. Every business and most individuals need someone with the domain expertise to help prepare tax returns, especially time or resource-strapped small business owners. Majo Jacinto in his Udemy course provides an in-depth foundational understanding of how to prepare tax returns (and stay current with ever-changing laws) that’ll certify you with tax prep skills in as little as a few hours of training and practice. Then once tax season rolls around you’ll be able to charge an average of $229 per return as a freelance tax preparer with this side business idea, according to CNBC.

Some steps apply to all businesses, while others do not. Keep this in mind as you go through the checklist. Some steps may not be applicable to you now, but the information may come in handy as you grow your business…
Item #8 should be changed from interior designer to interior decorator because indeed interior designers are required to have a degree and in many states are required to be licensed. Interior designers need to know building and safety codes among other things. Selecting paint colors and toss pillows is a very small part of the job. Many commercial ID’s do very little “decorating”. See IIDA or NCIDQ for more information.

This is similar to the banquet facility business but built around a facility that is ideal for weddings. People will pay a lot of money for a wedding venue that excites them! You could provide the catering and related services yourself, allow customers to bring their own caterers or require your customers work with a particular caterer that you chose.

My cousin worked for a jet ski rental firm in Sarasota Florida. Was that a fun job! Problem was that now and then when people panic on a jet ski, they will run it right into another boat! So, try to avoid renting jet skis in a busy boat anchorage and make sure your customers are confident operators before you set them loose!
Any business that does not require a storefront would be suitable for a home business. That is, any type of professional service, small-scale manufacturing, or something like that would be great. However, a restaurant or auto-parts store would not make a good home business.
Parents are often seeking out instructors to help their children develop musical talent. Sure, some parents may be just trying to make their kids appear well rounded on college applications, but there are also plenty of students looking for a rewarding skill to last them into adulthood. If you have some musical skills, considering taking on pupils for music lessons. Since you’re teaching a specialized skill, you can earn a decent hourly rate. The more specialized the instrument, the better (you can probably charge a fair bit more teaching the French horn than the piano). Consider doing home visits; you may be able to charge an even higher premium.
If you are thinking about opening a wholesale business, think twice! Although it’s typically easy and quick to be able to reach a high level of sales in this industry, you’ll find it a lot harder to earn a decent profit margin or perhaps even stay afloat at all. Most wholesale businesses operate on very thin profit margins that are possible only because of highly sophisticated and efficient operating procedures, tight credit and collections control, and most of all, a large volume of sales over which to spread overhead.
You might say that $5 is pretty low but if you keep at it and provide a good service, your account can be upgraded and you can provide services with extras where you can earn a lot more for each service provided. I saw many vendors who have listed services (plus a few extras) that can go up to $80-$100.
So happy to see Jam Maker on this list. I recently started my own business making and selling unique jams and jellies online. I never knew I was trendy. Many good ideas on here. Do you love woodworking? Even without a huge workshop, you can create some of the more popular crafts and sell them. And like most things, your success in business isn’t necessarily related to how skilled you are as a woodworker. When I was promoting my job search books I started to put up advertisements on bulletin boards around local colleges. Then, seeing my advertisements people who were running bulletin board services called me, and I hired them to do the work for me instead. You can either offer your services putting up notices for clients on public bulletin boards, or you can get more sophisticated and develop proprietary bulletin boards that you get local businesses or organizations to agree to display for you. For example, you could list tourist attractions and post the bulletin board at local hotels.

However, the odds against any particular venture backed business succeeding are low, so you need to spread your bets widely, especially if you are betting on very early stage companies. To get started you may first want to invest with a group of angel investors, typically plucking down $25k or $50k for each company you invest in.
